EUTC Spectrum Workshop

April 24, 2019 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

EUTC’s spectrum workshop will be held in the EUTC offices in Brussels on 24th April. It will focus on key areas of radio spectrum related to current and future applications demanded by the utility sector. The subjects covered will include:

  • Spectrum to support enhanced applications in the field area network and transition to the smart grid threats to existing allocations.
  • Opportunities presented by 5G.
  • Cyber security and potential wireless solutions to replace end-of-life wire line (copper) based services.

Each interactive session will be initiated by a short presentation from an industry expert followed by discussions with all participants on each topic. The group will facilitate sharing of ideas and advise of current related EUTC activities – as well as taking suggestions for new areas requiring attention by EUTC. The workshop represents a networking opportunity for sharing ideas with thought leaders from the European Utility sector.

Smart Grid Innovation Project Exchange
Digital Substations · SCADA Integration · Utility Telecom · Cyber Security

3-Day Conference, Exhibition & Networking Forum
26-28 March 2019 | Amsterdam

SGTech Europe 2019, the Smart Grid Innovation Project Exchange takes place 26-28 March 2019 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Now in its 3rd edition, this intensive multi-track conference draws together 250+ smart grid technical professionals for a review of 40+ utility implementation and innovation case studies, in the digital substation, next generation SCADA system, utility packet telecoms and cyber-security domains.

Opening with a morning of strategic plenary sessions, power grid digitisation leaders discuss the big trends impacting the evolution of the smart grid. Senior representatives from National Grid, Enedis, Orsted, Stedin, Vattenfall and EDP among others, reveal how they are making technology choices in light of new trends in the areas of IoT, AI, and Blockchain, to become fully data driven organisations.

The programme then breaks into three parallel technical tracks focused on the latest innovations and implementations of digital substations, SCADA systems, and utility telecoms. Day three deep-dives into the cyber-security opportunities and challenges facing smart grid IT and OT colleagues.

Alongside the case-study driven conference programme, there are a number of technology innovation panel discussions, end-user focused round table debates, live demo labs of the latest digitation tools and technologies, a solution zone displaying 20+ suppliers of smart grid solutions, and a networking evening reception open to all participants.

TRANSPORTATION
Malmö Airport is a small airport with regular flights only to Stockholm and low-cost flights to several airports in central and eastern Europe.
The easiest would be to fly into Copenhagen Airport and there you can take a direct train to Malmö (about 30 minutes).
MALMO DESCRIPTION
Malmö is the capital and largest city of the Swedish county of Scania. The metropolis is a gamma world city and is the third largest city in Sweden, after Stockholm and Gothenburg, and the sixth largest city in Scandinavia, with a population of above 300,000. Malmö was one of the earliest and most industrialized towns of Scandinavia, but it struggled with the adaptation to post-industrialism. Since the construction of the Öresund Bridge, Malmö has undergone a major transformation with architectural developments, and it has attracted new biotech and IT companies, and particularly students through Malmö University, founded in 1998. The city contains many historic buildings and parks, and is also a commercial centre for the western part of Scania.

LTE 450MHz communication network with PGE in Poland

Brussels, 10 March 2021

Following the decision for 450MHz frequencies to be utilised for critical infrastructure in energy and water in Poland, PGE Group have announced their intention to invest in establishing a 450MHz communication network with LTE technology, following various successful pilots.

These efforts are made to substitute the legacy Tetra system to incorporate LTE 450MHz frequency for the energy industry in Poland, allowing for increased robustness and security of the network and energy supply.  For more information, please click here.

The success builds upon other recent national spectrum allocations for private smart grid LTE deployment – Germany and Ireland have also made awards in the 400 and 450 MHz, with the Spanish regulator confirming an allocation at 2.3 GHz in July 2020. EUTC is pleased to have been able to play a part in these significant outcomes through a range of persistent and sustained lobbying at Global, EU and national level.

450connect GmbH is Germany’s sole license holder and operator of 450 MHz radio frequencies. Goal of the company is to quickly establish a nationwide mobile network based on LTE technology (4G and 5G) for digitalizing German energy and water utilities as well as other critical infrastructures. The 450MHz radio network is a crucial requirement for a secure and highly available communication of millions of critical machine-to-machine (M2M) applications and thus for the successful energy transition and transformation. Equal shareholders of 450connect are: the largest Dutch energy network operator Alliander, a consortium of regional energy providers, E.ON and Versorger-Allianz 450, to which numerous public utilities, energy and water suppliers with the participation of the EnBW subsidiary Netze BW belong.

European Utilities Telecom Council (EUTC) Aisbl is a non-profit organization delivering education, collaboration, best practices and thought leadership in telecommunication technology to utilities, other critical infrastructure providers and regulators, ensuring efficient, secure, sustainable and affordable smart infrastructure solutions. Moreover, the EUTC is the trusted advisor, source and resource of information and knowledge for its members and relevant policy makers regarding telecommunication technologies required by utilities and other critical infrastructure providers.

450connect awarded 450MHz License Rights in Germany till 2040

Brussels, 10 March 2021

Following the Federal Network Agency’s decision in late 2020 for 450MHz frequencies to be utilised for critical infrastructure in energy and water in Germany, 450connect GmbH has been awarded the license rights for the next 20 years. Aside from the concept for frequency usage proposed, 450connect has been prided for its expertise, performance and reliability.

EUTC is proud to announce that half of 450connect is owned by EUTC members: E.ON and Alliander (part of Netbeheer Nederland).

The network which will use the 450 MHz spectrum will facilitate secure, reliable smart grid connectivity to Germany’s energy and water utilities and ultimately over 30 million smart meter connections throughout Germany. It is anticipated to build the network over the next 3-4 years with between 1,000 and 2,000 base station sites.

The success builds upon other recent national spectrum allocations for private smart grid LTE deployment – Poland and Ireland have both made awards in the 400 MHz during November 2019, with the Spanish regulator confirming an allocation at 2.3 GHz in July 2020. EUTC is pleased to have been able to play a part in these significant outcomes through a range of persistent and sustained lobbying at Global, EU and national level.
